- Many horse populations suffered severe decreases in numbers in the last century; some, such as the Coldblood horse breeds drastically declined in their population size, while others could be saved at the last minute. It is important to evaluate the amount of genetic variability still present in those populations in order to develop conservation programmes. Furthermore, it is essential to construct phylogenetic trees and to establish the relationships among different horse populations in order to deepen our understanding of the evolution and domestication of the horse. In the past ten years microsatellite markers have been widely used to assess genetic variability within and between different horse breeds. Moreover, attempts have been made to evaluate the phylogenetic relationships of different horse breeds by comparing mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) sequences. In this paper we give an overview of the latest major findings in studies based on horse microsatellite data and mitochondrial DNA sequences.

- Despite a number of recent studies that have focused on the origin of domestic horses, genetic relationships between major geographical clusters still remain poorly understood. In this study we analyzed a 296 bp mtDNA fragment from the HVI region of 171 horses representing 11 native Iberian, Barb, and Exmoor breeds to assess the maternal phylogeography of Iberian horses. The mtDNA haplogroup with a CCG motif (nucleotide position 15,494 to 15,496) was the most frequent in Iberian and Barb breeds (0.42 and 0.57, respectively), regardless of geographic location or group of breeds. This finding supports the close genetic relationship between the ancestral mare populations of the Iberian Peninsula and Northern Africa. Phenotypic differences among the Northern and Southern Iberian groups of breeds are not explained by population subdivision based on maternal lineages. Our results also suggest that Northern Iberian ponies?which are phenotypically close to British ponies, especially Exmoor?are the result of an introgression rather than population replacement.

- CARACTERIZACION DE LA RAZA EQUINA POTTOKA MEDIANTE MARCADORES GENETICOS

- El grupo de investigación “Análisis genómico de la variación” de la UPV-EHU lleva trabajando desde el año 2000 en el análisis genético-poblacional de razas locales de animales domésticos de la CAPV, Navarra y su entorno, y en especial, de la raza equina Pottoka. Se han llevado a cabo análisis con el objetivo de caracterizar genéticamente esta raza, tanto a nivel intrarracial, preguntándonos sobre la existencia de posibles subpoblaciones dentro de la raza Pottoka, como desde el punto de vista interracial, comparándola con otras razas equinas situadas en su entorno más cercano (Jaca Navarra, Euskal Herriko Mendiko Zaldia y Burguete), con razas equinas del resto de la Cornisa Cantábrica (Losino, Asturcón, y Galego) y finalmente, con otras razas equinas foráneas, principalmente de ponis europeos del denominado tronco Celta, al que se adscriben tanto la raza Pottoka como el resto de ponis cantábricos. Además, se ha tratado de aportar información de utilidad acerca del origen de Pottoka y por tanto, del caballo ligero del norte peninsular; de todas formas, los resultados más relevadores a este respecto serán aquellos que puedan obtenerse a partir del análisis genético de los restos óseos localizados en yacimientos paleolíticos de la Cornisa Cantábrica, lo que nos gustaría poder abordar en breve. Por último, estamos contribuyendo a mejorar el manejo de la población de Pottoka por parte de las asociaciones provinciales, englobadas en la Euskadiko Pottokaren Federazioa (EPOFE), dado que los análisis genéticos realizados por nuestro grupo de investigación les permiten llevar a cabo una correcta identificación individual, control genealógico y asignación racial, así como conocer caracteres importados presentes en la raza como el color de capa alazán.
